so lucky [Sep. 3rd, 2008|03:36 pm]
Hi, all!

We are and continue to be *very* lucky. We have power, which means AC, which means I can breathe and sleep and all those good things. About 40% of the city is without power, and about 95% of the parish.

Just missed the grocery store, but they open again tomorrow. We're OK for canned food, but the fridge and freezer are bare. Not sure we know what they have, but we'll see.

I'll try to keep this updated - especially with the 3 more storms on the way! It looks like Hanna won't be much of an issue, unless it touches off more rain, but the other 2 - Ike and Josephine - are too far away to tell. I *hate* hurricane season.

Take care, all!

Storm update [Aug. 31st, 2008|08:53 pm]
This is likely to be my last update for a little while - if not longer.

"The Big G" is due to start affecting (or is that effecting?) our area by about noon, if I'm reading the charts right. I'm unplugging my computer tonight, and plan on being *very* cautious about putting her back on. That's how we lost Ibliss's computer during Rita - turned off, but the power surged right through the surge protector. Also burned out our microwave, but that's a lot easier to turn off and on, as well as plug and unplug.

Ashni did agree to be one of our contacts (thanks!), so please call her or one of our other information-keepers. We will try to call at least once a day, until power is on/back on/safe/what-have-you. If this is going to be anything like Ka'Rita, the phone lines are going to be b-u-s-y. (When they work at all!)

As for keeping our - I mean my, Ibliss is fine or fakes it really well - spirits up, I'm doing my best. VH-1 Classics has been having an "80 hours of 80s" marathon, which has been suprisingly helpful. It's hard to ansgt to bouncing hair bands. (And "It's the End of the World as We Know It" came on just as dinner was ready!)

Take care, everyone, and we'll do our best to do the same.

Gustav the Goober [Aug. 29th, 2008|03:30 pm]
All apologies to chocolate-covered-peanuts.

Wow, long time between updates. Sorry it's not for happy news.

Gustav, depending on who you listen to, is on the way.

Ibliss and I are staying until/if they call for mandatory evacuations. He has to, and I'm not leaving him alone. Who would torment him without me?

We will be calling our contact people - same drill as with Katrina/Rita. That would be 3: my mother, his mother, and ashni (if that's OK?). If that changes, I'll try to post it here. But if we lose power, this blog isn't a priority; the phone trees are.

Please keep us in your thoughts, and we'll all hope Gustav turns into a nice gentle rain. (It may not be realistic, but it's getting me through this so far.)

And I'm not even thinking about Hanna right now. Or those other orange & yellow blobs. ARGH!

time and bananas [Dec. 23rd, 2007|11:36 am]
[mood | cold - from 80 to 50!]
[music |the heater]

It's been awhile, hasn't it.

I meant to update during NaNo, but it was a struggle just writing this year. I didn't win (sob!) but did get about 30K words, which considering what was going on both at home and work, is still pretty good. It was the Persephone/Hades set, and will probably be going up here eventually.

Happy Holidays!

blogathon update [Jul. 12th, 2007|05:22 pm]
[mood | guilty - but only a li'l bit]
[music |none yet]

I will not be doing Blogathon this year.

A local charity is having a dance/social that night, which I was looking forward to before finding out the date. To be honest, the tickets (even with overhead) would be more than I could have realistically made for any other charity starting out this late. (And having my important thing early the week after also was part of the final decision.)

I do support the idea, and tentatively will do it next year. This gives me time if I do want to create a work-related blog, so a potential sponsor has some idea of what my content might be.

ETA: I might be willing to offer "prizes" to those who are willing to do blogathon, or even just donate to one. As long as it doesn't get too much out of hand, and that such "prizes" would (a) be allowed to be posted on this LJ; and (b) give me reasonable time to complete while going to said dance and are off on said important trip. Strictly on the honor system, but if I can't trust my friends, who can I trust?

(If you found this journal via the friends list of a friend, you might want to read some of my posted stories to get an idea of what I tend to write.)

No anonymous posters. No one under 16/18/21/legality. Void if prohibited. Substantial penalty for early withdrawal. Fnord.

considering blogathon [Jul. 12th, 2007|01:53 pm]
[Current Location |(work)]
[mood | nervously excited]
[music |dehumidifiers humming]

I just heard about Blogathon and am considering trying it. (Yes, I am behind the times. My next trick will be to use the camera on my cell phone!) Obligatory link below:

Blogathon 2007

Staying up for 24 hours shouldn't be a problem; I've been to cons before. Having content for every half-hour might be trickier.

The other part to the debate is which blog should I use. I've always said I wanted a work-related one (all the cool people in my profession are doing it!) and it would be much easier to get a charity to go along with it if I could use my real name (which won't happen under this one). On the other hand, good content is harder with said name attached (ie, no cheating and filling posts with smut, which isn't cheating, now is it?).

Then again, the main site doesn't tell you how to get/find a charity (a few FAQ points say there is a list, but I can't find one. Many good ones are taken, but I should be able to find someone willing to take a chance on me. I hope.

So is anyone else doing this? Tried it before and hated it? Tried it before and loved it? Think I'm an utter loony?

obligatory "not dead" post [Jul. 3rd, 2007|08:57 pm]
[mood |awake - slowly, but gradually]
[music |Carpenters - Top of the World]

Yes, I'm still alive!

Let's just say, to quote an earlier reply, "it's been an odd few months". But I have been writing (some), and hope to do more (soon). I can browse through my writing folder to check dates if anyone's really curious what I've been working on and when.

And how much "cheating" is back-dating posts? I tried National Poetry Writing Month this April, and I'm debating about sharing some of the poems. They might have to be friends-locked, because I did have some people show up and who knows if they might Google a line out of morbid curiosity. Ideas? Opinions? Crickets?

It might take me a little while to get used to all the new bells-and-whistles LJ has added. Pictures - probably not. Unless they're really neat.

Does anyone else still use the word "neat"?

Anyway, take care, loyal readers. (I have loyal readers?? When did that happen? Are they like roadies? Will they help me move? Will they read the porn? Or is that pron? I'm so confused...)

another november bites the dust [Nov. 30th, 2006|11:06 pm]
[mood | devious - not quite on the QT]
[music |Truth of the Heart - Melissa Ethridge]

Wow - I hadn't realized it had been so long since I updated. I've been writing like crazy, or sleeping off these crazy headaches.

I both did and didn't meet my goals - neither story made 50K, but together they did, and I made my "I'll be happy if I just hit X" goals, so this November wasn't so bad.

Main story - Final November Wordcount - 30,223 (60%)
Other story - Final November Wordcount - 40,180 (80%)

Total November Wordcount - 70,403 (141%)

I have the day-by-day totals, which I may put up if anyone's curious. I would *like* to finish the main story in December, but I don't know if I'll be able to, what with finals and everything else going on.

I hope November and/or NaNoWriMo was good to everyone this year!

plugging away [Nov. 16th, 2006|10:15 pm]
[mood | drained - lots of Q's at work]
[music |Yeah, that would be a good idea]

Had a headache, but despite taking a nap I managed a nibble.

Wordcount - 1188
Total - 18,350 (37%)

But I did some outline work, and now have notes for the rest of this chapter and the next one like it. So that'll help.

busy day, still wrote [Nov. 15th, 2006|10:49 pm]
[mood | blank - mix of tired/worried/?]
[music |October Project - Bury My Lovely]

Update for two days:

11/14

Non-NaNo wordcount - 1633

11/15

Wordcount - 1085
Total - 17,162 (34%)

Current Totals

Non-Nano Total - 18,996
Combined Total - 36,158

Writing this weekend will be tricky, with our short notice (but very welcome!) trip; I'm hoping that the holidays will give me time to catch up.

Note - for the record, I didn't *plan* to go for 100K. I'm still hoping for a 50K NaNo with "a little extra". Really!

good writing [Nov. 14th, 2006|12:29 am]
[mood | okay - not amazing, but OK]
[music |heater - tomorrow, the AC!]

OK - I may be getting this: veggies first, then desert. Or dessert. (Brain check on aisle six, please!)

Wordcount - 2246
Total - 16,077 (32%)

Non-NaNo wordcount - 1042
Total - 17,363

Combined projects - 33,440

Now if only I can keep this up, and maybe have more veggies? With chocolate for the holidays?

tale of two nanos [Nov. 13th, 2006|12:46 am]
[mood | annoyed - but mostly at myself]
[music |cats begging for dinner]

Either I'll have two stories of 50K each, and my head will explode, or two stories that together equal 50K.

Wordcount - 2825
Total - 13,831 (27%)

This would be a really good count - for last week. I'm not just "a bit behind", I'm really, really behind.

However, when you add the other writing I did:

Weekend wordcount (10 & 11) - 4429
Non-Nano Total - 16,321
Combined Total - 30,152

So in one sense, I *am* being productive. Sort of. And it'll be good cushion in case the official one ends early! (Meh, I'm going to bed.)

step by step [Nov. 9th, 2006|12:18 am]
[mood | guilty - didn't write a thing!]
[music |None - Time for Bed]

And I do mean baby-steps

Wordcount - 811 (2%)
Total - 11006 (22%)

I have nothing to say. Actually, I lied. :)

My muses scare me. For both this story and the other one. (Details forthcoming.)

ah, bien [Nov. 6th, 2006|12:53 am]
[mood | frustrated - silly muses!]
[music |The Fan - And yes, we need a fan now.]

Somedays it's not worth the effort to gnaw through the straps.

Wordcount - 985 (2%)
Total - 10,195 (20%)

This week's goal - Not Met

Non-NaNo stuff written

Wordcount - 5321

If I'm in danger of not making my goal, these "non" things are going to count. Because it's not *fair*, that my quiet muses all wake up when something else needs to be done. Grr.

(And we all know what was in the second batch, right?)

eyes are fuzzy [Nov. 5th, 2006|01:16 am]
[mood | sleepy - prob'ly go bed soon]
[music |Vertical Horizon - Give You Back]

It's hard to keep my motivation when my muses want to give me tangents that I *can't* use. Grr.

Wordcount:
Today - 3898 (8%)
Total - 9210 (18%)

And the nobles are taking over the commoner-themed story. But if they're talking, I'm typing. (That means start talking, commoners, or they'll win!)

high school meme [Nov. 4th, 2006|01:57 am]
I need quizzes like a hole in the head, but hey!

You paid attention during 91% of high school!

85-100% You must be an autodidact, because American high schools don't get scores that high! Good show, old chap!

Do you deserve your high school diploma?

Of course, had I done poorly, the results wouldn't see the light of day.

NaNoWriMo Once Again [Nov. 4th, 2006|01:38 am]
[mood | pleased - good wordcount today]
[music |None - the CD just ran out]

My poor journal, how much I neglect you.

Well, after much computer trouble and a late start, I've finally started working on this year's NaNovel. And, for an especial challenge - no smut!

At least until after November - epilogues, anyone?

Wordcount

November 1 - 1090 (2%)
November 3 - 4222 (8%)
Total - 5312 (11%)

This is the fairy-tale story I mentioned earlier. Only I have more nobility suplots than commoner ones. And no outline.

And did I mention no porn? Argh!

new icon [May. 19th, 2006|07:16 pm]
[mood |geeky - got to play with mlady]
[music |October Project - Adam and Eve]

I have a new icon!

I made it all by myself and am very proud of me for remembering Photoshop after so long after not using it. I even have a third one, my first animated gif, but I don't like it. You can only use one image for animation in PS, so I have to rethink the idea. However, I should be able to do the nifty words-only pics (see the grammar one floating around; it's wicked cool). I'll take requests as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

I was going to wait until I wrote something, but my muses are on holiday right now. We have hopes for this weekend. :)

ten words meme [May. 13th, 2006|10:16 pm]
[mood | drained - harder than it looks]
[music |Debbie Gibson - Shake Your Love]

I got bit by a meme - it was bound to happen, sooner or later. They're contagious. *g*

If you'd like to take part, comment here and I'll pick out a letter for you. You then post in *your* LJ ten words beginning with that letter, and what each one means to you - and then you give out letters to people who request them.

Cut for length and comfort - read at your own risk. I wouldn't say it's unsafe to read, but it was rather... sharp to write.

Peer into my psyche )
